Last weekend I found an interesting internet site on "terroir".

The site is bilingual (English and German) and reflects more than just the effect of soil for good wine. It also tells about the importance of the "grape variety, terrain, microclimate, geology and soil as well as the work put in by the winemaker in the vineyard and cellar".
